Local Garden Care in Bundoora

Your GMC Team in Bundoora

Bundoora is a large residential suburb built around university campuses and extensive parkland, with a mix of 1970s and 80s family homes, newer townhouses and significant institutional grounds.

What we know about Bundoora gardens

  • Bundoora's 1970s and 80s gardens often carry overgrown original shrubs and hedges that can be renovated properly if cut in early spring rather than removed.
  • The suburb's large rental and student housing component makes end-of-lease and between-tenancy garden tidy-ups a regular job here.
  • Parkland frontages bring running grasses and weed seed into adjoining gardens, so a maintained boundary line matters more than repeated spraying.

Gardening in Bundoora

About Bundoora

Bundoora takes its name from Kelbundoora, a nineteenth-century Wurundjeri man, and before European settlement the area held several large wetlands. After the land sales of the late 1830s it carried sheep and grain, and in 1899 horse breeder John Matthew Vincent Smith bought the 245-hectare Bundoora Park property, where his Federation Queen Anne homestead still stands as an arts centre. The public Bundoora Park now covers about 180 hectares and includes Mount Cooper. La Trobe University has its main campus here and RMIT has a campus too. The suburb runs from Preston in the south-west to Plenty in the north-east, which is why three councils share it and why gardens at either end can differ a lot.

Soil, water and weather

Bundoora sits toward the eastern edge of the basalt plain that covers much of Melbourne's north, so soil and drainage change across the suburb. One garden may be on heavy clay while another a few streets away drains quite differently, and the wetlands recorded before settlement are a reminder that low-lying spots can hold water. Rain is a little more generous on this side of the city: the Bureau of Meteorology's Viewbank station, to the south-east, averages about 677 mm a year, with January days averaging 28.3ยฐC. Dig a spade-deep test hole before planting, improve the soil to suit what you find, and keep the beds mulched through summer.

Jobs that suit Bundoora gardens

  • Garden clean ups: Gardens backing onto Bundoora Park or the creek reserves collect leaf litter, fallen branches and self-sown seedlings. A clean up is quoted per job and clears beds, edges and fence lines, with the green waste taken away on the day.
  • Lawn mowing: Townhouses and units in Bundoora usually have a small lawn that sits near the $45 end of our pricing guide, while family homes with a full front and back typically fall around $50 to $65. Edging and a tidy-up are included.
  • Commercial maintenance: Townhouse groups and rental properties near La Trobe often have common areas that no single resident looks after. Commercial maintenance is quoted per site, so a property manager gets one regular visit covering lawns, edges and beds.

Questions

Bundoora Garden Care FAQ

Which council is my Bundoora property in?

It depends on the street. Bundoora is shared between the City of Whittlesea, the City of Darebin and the City of Banyule, with Whittlesea covering the largest share of the area. Your rates notice names the right one.

Why does part of my Bundoora garden stay wet all winter?

Low spots on heavy soil hold water once the ground is saturated, and Bundoora had large wetlands before it was settled. Coring the lawn, adding organic matter and keeping off wet ground all help. Badly waterlogged areas may need drainage work, which a plumber or landscaper should assess.

How far is Bundoora from GMC's base?

About 12 km in a straight line from our Glenroy base. Because Bundoora is so large, the closest parts are on the Reservoir and Thomastown side and the furthest are up near Plenty. For a free quote, call 0448 215 297.
