About Merlynston
Merlynston is not a separate suburb on the map. It is the neighbourhood around Merlynston station on Bain Avenue, inside Coburg North, postcode 3058. The station opened in 1889 as North Coburg, and it took the Merlynston name in 1922, a few years after Donald Bain bought 31 hectares here in 1919 to subdivide into a housing estate, which he named after his daughter Merlyn. The line was duplicated in 1959, when the present island platform was built. Merlynston has its own small shopping strip with a few cafes, and Boundary Road, just north of the station, separates it from the Fawkner and Hadfield side.

The Merlynston Creek runs through this part of Coburg North, and the SES has identified flash flooding risk along its course, with recorded floods going back to 1891 and the most recent listed in 2011.
