Local Garden Care in Essendon

Your GMC Team in Essendon

Essendon is an established, tightly held suburb of Edwardian, Californian bungalow and interwar homes on generous blocks, with wide tree-lined streets and front gardens that are genuinely on display.

What we know about Essendon gardens

  • Essendon front gardens do real work โ€” a hard clean edge, fresh dark mulch and a densely cut lawn deliver most of the street appeal on their own.
  • Period frontages here suit formal hedging: buxus for a low border, murraya or viburnum at mid height, photinia or pittosporum where height is needed quickly.
  • This is a strong auction market, and a garden prepared six weeks out photographs far better than one cut three days before the campaign.

About Essendon

Essendon is bounded by Hoffmans Road on the west, Keilor Road and Woodland Street on the north, the Moonee Ponds Creek on the east and Buckley Street on the south. It takes its name from a village in Hertfordshire, England, and it grew quickly after trains to Melbourne began running in 1871 and electric trams followed in 1906. In the 1880s the local council resisted cattle saleyards and brickworks because of the risk of polluting the Maribyrnong River. Large houses from that period still stand, including Earlsbrae Hall, built in 1890 and now part of Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School. The Moonee Ponds Creek Trail follows the suburb's eastern and northern edges, and the Maribyrnong River Trail lies along the south-west.

Soil, water and weather

Essendon sits on the basalt plain, but the land falls toward the Moonee Ponds Creek along the eastern boundary, so a fair number of blocks have some slope. Sloping front gardens shed water quickly in a downpour and dry out first at the top, while the clay at the bottom of the block stays wet for longer. Older gardens also carry decades of root growth from established trees, which competes with the lawn for water right through summer. Deep, occasional watering, a higher mowing height from December and coarse mulch that stays where it is put suit these conditions better than short daily sprinkles.

Jobs that suit Essendon gardens

  • Garden clean ups: Larger period gardens build up overgrown shrubs, self-sown seedlings and leaf in hard-to-reach corners. A full clean up resets the beds, lifts low branches clear of paths and takes the green waste away on the day, quoted per job.
  • Lawn mowing: On a generous Essendon block a front and back lawn can range from the standard family band of about $50 to $65 up into the large lawn band of about $70 to $110 or more. Weekly or fortnightly visits get the best per-visit rate.
  • Rubbish removal: Renovations and extensions on older Essendon homes leave timber offcuts, old pavers and tired garden edging behind. Rubbish removal is quoted per load, and the green waste can go out with it.

Questions

Essendon Garden Care FAQ

How are Essendon gardens different from the newer suburbs further north?

Mostly in age. Many Essendon gardens have had generations to develop, so the work is usually about managing mature trees, old hedges and beds that have filled in, rather than getting a new lawn established. Pruning, staged cut-backs and regular edging keep them in shape.

When is the best time to cut back an overgrown Essendon garden?

Late winter to early spring suits most shrubs and broadleaf hedges, just before new growth starts, so the cuts close over quickly. Spring-flowering plants are the exception and are best pruned straight after they flower. Avoid hard cuts in the January heat.

Which council covers Essendon?

Essendon is in the City of Moonee Valley. The old City of Essendon, whose town hall is now the Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds, became part of Moonee Valley in 1994. Strathmore, Essendon North, Essendon West and Moonee Ponds are in the same council.
