Local Garden Care in Strathmore
Your GMC Team in Strathmore
Strathmore is a settled, tightly held residential suburb of interwar and post-war homes on generous blocks, with mature street trees and consistently well-presented front gardens.
What we know about Strathmore gardens
- Strathmore's front gardens set a high local standard, and formal low hedging with a crisp lawn edge is what carries it.
- Generous blocks here mean substantial lawns that reward a weekly mow in spring and a raised cutting height through summer.
- Mature canopy produces significant autumn leaf, and clearing it through the drop rather than at the end protects the turf underneath.

About Strathmore
Strathmore runs from Woodland Street in the south up to the Moonee Ponds Creek in the north and north-east, with Pascoe Vale Road on the east and Bulla Road and Essendon Airport on the west. The Tullamarine Freeway cuts straight through it, so the suburb has a northern half and a southern half that feel quite separate. The area was known as North Essendon until the name Strathmore, taken from Thomas Napier's home valley in Scotland, was first suggested in 1936; the station took the new name in 1955. Napier Park, ten acres given to the council by Theodore Napier in 1920, keeps a protected stand of river red gums and shows what this ground looked like before the houses arrived. The Moonee Ponds Creek Trail follows the northern edge.
Soil, water and weather
Both halves of Strathmore sit on the heavy basalt clay found right across the north-west. It stays wet and sticky through winter and sets hard by late summer, so a lawn that has been walked on all winter benefits from coring once the ground has dried out in spring. Blocks that fall toward the Moonee Ponds Creek drain unevenly, with the top of the yard drying first and the lower end staying damp for days after rain. Keeping 50 to 75 mm of mulch on garden beds and letting the grass grow a little longer from December holds moisture in the clay far better than watering more often.
Jobs that suit Strathmore gardens
- Lawn mowing: Bigger Strathmore blocks can fall in the large lawn band on our pricing page, around $70 to $110 or more a visit, while a typical front and back sits closer to $50 to $65. Weekly or fortnightly customers get the best per-visit rate.
- Garden clean ups: Autumn under mature trees leaves seed pods, twigs and leaf litter across beds and paths. A one-off clean up before winter clears it all, cuts back anything growing over the paths and takes the green waste away on the day.
- Hedge trimming: Low hedges along Strathmore front fences keep a straight top and square corners when they are trimmed lightly two or three times between spring and autumn. Hedge trimming starts from $60 depending on length and height.

What We Do in Strathmore
Questions
Strathmore Garden Care FAQ
Does GMC cover both halves of Strathmore?
Yes. The Tullamarine Freeway splits Strathmore into a northern and a southern half, and we work on both sides, from Woodland Street up to the Moonee Ponds Creek. Strathmore is about 3 km from our Glenroy base, and quotes are free on 0448 215 297.
Can a lawn grow under a big gum tree in Strathmore?
It usually struggles. Large eucalypts take most of the water and light within their root zone, so grass there thins out every summer. Mowing that patch higher, watering deeply but less often, or swapping it for mulch and a hardy ground cover tends to work better than reseeding again.
