Local Garden Care in Mickleham

Your GMC Team in Mickleham

Mickleham is one of Melbourne's fastest-growing northern suburbs, with large new housing estates pushing north alongside remaining semi-rural acreage. Gardens range from brand-new estate lawns to established rural properties on very large blocks.

What we know about Mickleham gardens

  • New Mickleham estates sit on compacted builder's fill, so soil improvement, aeration and an establishment feed make an enormous difference in the first twelve months.
  • The larger and rural blocks frequently have long boundary hedges and windbreak planting that need scheduled trimming to stay dense rather than leggy.
  • Mickleham's exposed position on the volcanic plain means drought-tolerant grasses and wind-hardy natives are the smart long-term choice.

Gardening in Mickleham

About Mickleham

Mickleham sits north of Yuroke on Mickleham Road, on Melbourne's outer northern edge, and part of it lies beyond the Urban Growth Boundary. A post office opened here in 1862, and for most of its history this was a rural district. To the west, settlers along Deep Creek had their own Konagaderra post office from 1913 to 1920, and that area is now known as Konagaderra Springs. The change since 2016 has been dramatic. Mickleham grew from a small rural population into a large suburb within a single census period, and in 2018 it was described as Australia's fastest-growing suburb. The number of homes is forecast to keep rising, so finished houses and lots still under construction often sit side by side.

Soil, water and weather

Mickleham is on the same volcanic plain as the rest of Hume, with heavy, reactive clay beneath the soil. The nearest long-running Bureau of Meteorology station is at Melbourne Airport, where January days average 26.7ยฐC, rainfall is about 537 mm a year and the wettest months are October and November. A lawn or garden put in during late spring therefore faces its first January with shallow roots. Autumn planting, followed by deep, infrequent watering through the first summer, gives new turf and shrubs the best chance of getting their roots down into the clay before the heat arrives.

Jobs that suit Mickleham gardens

  • Synthetic turf: With small backyards on many of the new lots, some owners skip lawn altogether. Synthetic turf avoids the first-summer battle to establish grass on clay and suits narrow side paths and play areas. It is quoted per job.
  • Garden clean ups: Once the builder has handed over, a new Mickleham block often still has rubble, offcuts and weeds along the fences. A post-build clean up clears the site so the landscaping can start, and the green waste goes on the day.
  • Lawn mowing: The larger semi-rural blocks toward the edge of Mickleham carry far more grass than an estate lot. These sit in the large lawn band on our pricing page, from about $70 to $110 or more a visit, or are quoted on size.

Questions

Mickleham Garden Care FAQ

I've just moved into a new Mickleham estate. When should I lay a lawn?

Autumn is usually the best time. The soil is still warm, rain is more reliable and the lawn has months to root before its first summer. Grass laid in late spring on clay has to get through January heat with shallow roots, which is hard on any new lawn.

Which council is Mickleham in?

Mickleham is in the City of Hume, the same council as Craigieburn, Greenvale and Broadmeadows. Its neighbours include Craigieburn, Kalkallo and Yuroke, and GMC covers all of them from our Glenroy base, about 17 km away in a straight line.

How should I water a young Mickleham garden over summer?

Deeply and less often. A long soak once or twice a week draws roots down into the clay, while a light daily sprinkle keeps them near the surface where hot days dry them out. On an exposed new lot, a thick layer of mulch over the beds holds that moisture in for longer.

Do you provide lawn mowing in Mickleham?

Yes. GMC provides regular weekly and fortnightly lawn mowing, edging and tidy-ups in Mickleham (VIC 3064) and across Melbourne's northern growth corridor. Call 0448 215 297 for a free quote.

How much is lawn mowing in Mickleham?

Do you do one-off garden clean ups in Mickleham?
